Definitions of some of the hernia related terms we commonly use.
Defect: A term often used interchangeably with hernia - refers to the hole in the abdominal or pelvic wall
Epigastric Hernia: Found in the middle of the belly, below the breastbone and above the bellybutton.
Femoral Hernia: Often found in women, the tissue bulges from the pelvis in the region of the groin. The bulge may extend to the upper thigh.
Incisional Hernia: Occurs at an incision from prior surgery - the prior incision creates a point of weakness that eventually results in a defect in the abdominal wall.
Inguinal Hernia: Common hernia that occurs in the groin.
Laparoscopic Surgery: Similar to Robotic Repair, a surgeon is operating on a patient using small incisions with handheld instruments and a 2D camera - a minimally invasive form of surgery
Minimally Invasive Surgery: Surgery performed through small (1 cm or 1/2 inch) incisions. Generally results in less pain and shorter recovery time.
Robotic Repair: A form of surgery where the surgeon uses robotic assisted technology to fix a hernia and is able to see the internal organs using a 3D camera. Similar to laparoscopy and considered a minimally invasive form of surgery
Umbilical Hernia: Found near or at the belly button.
Ventral Hernia: General term used for a hernia in the abdomen area.
